The Challenge
The Oberoi, Bengaluru aimed to reposition its existing Pan-Asian restaurant, Szechwan Court. The perception was limited to that of a typical Indian-Chinese restaurant. The need was to move beyond this and create a contemporary, differentiated dining experience that aligns with the brand’s future vision.
The Strategy
The approach was rooted in a strong cultural and philosophical foundation. Inspiration was drawn from the Japanese art of Kintsugi and the Oriental philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, which celebrates the beauty of imperfection and the harmony of contrasts.
This became the central lens through which the entire brand was reimagined—from naming to spatial experience to communication. The idea was to move away from a cuisine-led identity to an experience-led one.
The Idea & Identity
Naming
The name Wabi-Sabi reflects an Oriental worldview centred on transience, imperfection, and contrast. Its rhythm and balance also mirror the blend of Chinese and Japanese influences within the restaurant.
Brand Idea
The beauty of contrasts. This philosophy shaped every aspect of the brand.
Spatial & Visual Language
The restaurant brings together rugged and refined elements—dark slate surfaces, gold accents, and deep reds—creating a layered sensory experience. Natural textures meet polished finishes. Jagged edges meet clean lines. Raw materials meet delicate detailing. Kintsugi-inspired elements and gold detailing reinforce the idea of finding beauty in imperfection.
Ambience & Experience
The space is designed as a theatre. From the sound of flowing water to the central sushi bar and the interplay of light and material, every detail contributes to an immersive, almost meditative dining experience.
Communication
The launch narrative extended this idea into storytelling:
The Game of Colours
The Art of Imperfection
The Theatre Awaits
Each piece of communication invited guests to step into an experience, not just a restaurant.
The Outcome
The transformation redefined the restaurant’s identity. Wabi-Sabi emerged as a contemporary Pan-Asian destination that stands apart from conventional Indian-Chinese offerings.
The philosophy of imperfection was seamlessly expressed across the space, the food, and the communication, creating a cohesive and memorable experience.
The result was a brand that generated intrigue, elevated perception, and built a tribe of diners drawn to both flavour and philosophy.
